Jake’s Gift is a surprisingly funny, multi-award-winning drama, about a Canadian WW2 veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy, France, for the 60th anniversary of D-Day. While roaming the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious ten-year-old from the local village whose inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and personalizes the story behind one soldier’s grave.
Myrtle is having a hard time making friends at her new school, but when Myrtle’s Uncle Vince arrives in town, she finally feels like she has someone who understands her and with whom she can really be herself. Their friendship becomes the closest and most important relationship in Myrtle’s life but, sometimes, Vince’s behaviour confuses her – and even causes the other kids at school to make fun of her. So, when her Uncle Vince stops coming to see her, Myrtle must learn how to deal with and accept his lifelong struggle with mental illness.
Roderick Glanville’s one-hour version of this “Nantucket sleighride”, cracks along with all the excitement and fury you’d expect from such an epic sea adventure. Playing no less than 12 roles, it’s impossible to take your eyes off Glanville as he shifts between characters; from Ishmael to Ahab and Queequeg to Starbuck, his physical embodiment of each of the Pequod’s crew is worth the price of admission alone.
